Types of Corrugated Flutes & Honeycomb Board Explained

What Is Corrugated Board?

Corrugated board consists of one or more fluted (wavy) layers sandwiched between flat linerboards.

This structure gives packaging both light weight and strength — ideal for shipping boxes and industrial packaging.

Single-wall: e.g., B flute, C flute
Double-wall: e.g., BC flute, AB flute
Triple-wall: e.g., BCB flute

Common Corrugated Flute Types

Flute TypeThickness (mm)Features
A-Flute≈ 4.8 – 5.0Excellent cushioning and stacking strength; used for fragile goods.
B-Flute≈ 2.5 – 3.0Good puncture resistance and surface printing; common in retail packaging.
C-Flute≈ 3.5 – 4.0Balanced between cushioning and rigidity; the most widely used flute.
E-Flute≈ 1.2 – 1.8Thin and smooth; ideal for small boxes and detailed printing.
EB-Flute≈ 4.0 – 4.5Double-wall combining E and B for strength and fine print surface.
BC-Flute≈ 6.0 – 7.0Very strong double-wall for heavy-duty packaging.
BCB-Flute≈ 9.0+Triple-wall for industrial and export shipping cartons.

Honeycomb Board

Honeycomb board uses a hexagonal core structure between paper liners.

It provides excellent compression strength while remaining lightweight — perfect for furniture, pallet systems, and protective packaging.

Common Honeycomb Thickness

TypeTypical Thickness (mm)Typical Applications
Ultra-thin Type5mm – 10mmLightweight packaging, display panels, inner liners, cushioning layers
Standard Type15mm – 30mmRegular shipping boxes, buffer boards, pallet tops
Thickened Type40mm – 60mmFurniture panels, door cores, machinery protection packaging
Heavy-duty Structural Type70mm – 100mm (customizable up to 150mm)Large pallets, appliance shells, replacements for wood or foam boards
